A life long resident of the North Shore, Fred Day has compiled over 30 years of coaching and officiating experience at all levels of soccer. Day's list of accomplishments include six years as Head Coach of the Wheaton College (Ma) Women's Varsity Soccer Program, Head Coach Massachusetts State Select Women’s Team, Head Coach Northeast Women's Bay State Games Team, over 20-years as the coach and founder of the North Shore Women's Soccer Club, and many years coaching both boys and girls at all age levels of club and youth soccer on the North Shore. Day will be entering his seventh season as head coach of the Swampscott High School (SHS) Varsity Girls Soccer Program where he has compiled a 69-23-10 record, qualifying for the State Tournament each year and reaching the Division II North Finals in 2003 and the Semi Finals in 2005 where the Big Blue lost to Danvers in a game that was termed an instant classic after going two over times and twenty penalty kicks. In 2003 Day was voted NEC Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches, and NEC Co-Coach of the Year in 2006. He was named NEC Coach of the year in 2007. During the summers of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, Fred Day , along with Cindy Lavender, has operated the hugely successful LavenderDay Summer Soccer Camp, held in Swampscott.

cindy.jpg (335123 bytes)Cindy Lavender returned in 2005 as Assistant Coach of the Big Blue Girls Varsity Soccer program after serving as its head coach from 1996 through 2001. While in the head coaching position, she would earn the Lynn Item "Coach of the Year" award in 2000. A summa cum laude graduate from Springfield College in 1995, Cindy Lavender was a two-year varsity soccer captain, MVP, leading goal scorer, All-New England selection, Northeast-10 All-Star, and Female/Scholar-Athlete of the Year (1994-1995).  She earned her Masters in Education (with a 4.0 grade average) from the University of New England.  She also attained recognition as a Region I All-Star on the Massachusetts Women's Select Team. During the summer months, she is a member of the North Shore Women's Soccer Club.   During the summers of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, Cindy Lavender, along with Fred Day operated the hugely successful LavenderDay Summer Soccer Camp, held in Swampscott.

 

 
 
 
Gabe Mejail– Guest Instructor
Current Merrimack College Women’s Varsity Head Coach

mejail.jpg (17116 bytes)Recognized as one of the most successful coaches in NCAA women’s soccer history, Gabe Mejail has completed 24 seasons at Merrimack. He has led the Warriors to eight Northeast-10 Conference regular season championships, two ECAC titles and eight trips to the NCAA Regionals while compiling a record of 339-132-28 (.720). With 28 years as a head coach under his belt, Mejail is the winningest coach in Division II women’s soccer history with 373 career victories (.694 winning pct.). His victory total ranks third among coaches in all divisions and his career winning percentage of .694 is also among the all-time leaders.

Mejail has overseen the development of numerous all-conference performers and 20 of his players have earned All-America honors including (class): Heather Macedo ’08, Hillary McGarr ’08, Gabrielle Gramprey ’10, Caitlin Hall ’08, Lindsay Sheffield ’06, Laurie Lamoureux ’05, Patty Cronin ’03, Rachel McCarthy ’02, Alison Skoglund ’02, Annmarie Yutkins ’02, Lisa Jensen ’00, Sue Cookson ’00, Jen Kusz ’97, Kathryn Barkman ’96, Nancy Daly ’95, Bethann O’Leary ’91, Beth Licopoli ’90, Sue Plante ’90 and Michelle Muise ’88. The Warriors play in conference has been nothing short of dominant, as Merrimack stands at 193-52-16 (.788) in league play since 1985. Over that same time, Mejail has coached his club to six Northeast-10 tournament titles, eight NCAA appearances, including one Elite Eight appearance in 1996, and nine appearances in the ECAC tournament, including the 1988 & 2000 championships.

Along with the victories and championships have come the coaching accolades for Mejail. He was named the Northeast-10 Coach of the Year on seven occasions: 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1993, 1996 and 2003. In addition he was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional and New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Coach of the Year in 1986, 1989, 1993, 1996, 2002 and 2003. Mejail also received NEWISA’s Service Award in 1992. Mejail started his coaching career at Wheaton College, posting a 30-23-7 mark from 1979-82.

Born and raised in Argentina, Mejail moved to the United States in 1969, gaining citizenship in 1974. He studied urban planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned his degree in 1978. He earned his master’s degree in education from Harvard University in 1989 and now teaches at Buckingham Browne and Nichols School. Mejail and his family reside in Reading, Mass.

 

Luz Quirk  M.Ed., L.A.T.C.
High Performance Sports Trainer

quirk.jpg (8655 bytes)Luz Quirk is a Licensed Athletic Trainer with the State of Massachusetts and a certified member of the National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA). She also has a Master's Degree in Education with a concentration in Organizational Management from Endicott College. Luz has worked as an Athletic Trainer since graduating from Springfiled College in 1997.

Proir to joining the High Performance Sports team, Luz was the Head Athletic Trainer at Swampscott High School for 5 years and also worked with Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation in Salem, MA. Luz also serves as an Athletic Trainer for the U.S. Figure Skating Team (USFSA). She has worked with figure skaters and synchronized skaters at the national and international level since January 2001, In addition to her experience with the USFSA, Quirk has worked with a variety of athlete of all levels. Quirk has served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League, the Agganis All-Star Classic and many private sports camps including; Lacrosse, Soccer, Basketball and Baseball.
